Education
The School System in Macon, Georgia serves pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade students from Macon and Bibb County. The school system is managed by an elected Bibb County Board of Education and an appointed Superintendent of Schools. The Board meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and is held in the Board Room at the Administrative offices at 484 Mulberry Street in downtown Macon. The Superintendent of Schools is Sharon Patterson.
Citizens in the Macon Area have approved a comprehensive five year, $150 million school facilities improvement program. The plan calls for the building of new elementary, middle and high schools in rapidly growing north and south Bibb County. Several existing schools within the city limits will also undergo either extensive renovation or new additions. A system wide "Career Center" trains students for highly skilled, highly paid occupations in the Central Georgia area with partnerships between local industry and the school system.
All school entities within Macon area are connected to each other through a Wide Area Network (WAN). This connectively enables enhanced communication via electronic mail and the Internet, access to district-level resources such as Board policies and district calendars via an Intranet, and access to student and financial information software stored on the AS/400.
